Philosophy

We, the Faculty of the Jameson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, believe that:

Humans are unique and adaptable beings.  They possess dignity and worth with potential for self-understanding and self-direction.  As unique individuals, human adjustment will vary in response to environmental conditions.  During the life span,
a person grows and changes through interaction with family, group, and community
systems.

Environment is a set of interrelated forces, with internal and external components, which influence human adaptation and growth.  Environmental factors may encompass, but are not limited to, biological and physical conditions, psychological and intellectual functioning, religious, cultural, and sociological values and beliefs.

Community is viewed as a system of people living a relationship which can be based upon geographic considerations, cultural ties or bonds of special interest.  The community has a responsibility to participate in the planning and implementation of health services that affect life and well being.  We contribute to the welfare of the community by serving as resource personnel for group endeavors, providing educational opportunities, and preparing graduates to meet current nursing needs.

Health is seen as a value judgment by the client and community in relation to positive life function.  Factors which affect one's level of wellness include genetic endowment, lifestyle, environment, response to illness, and the availability of health care. The motivation and ultimate responsibility for action toward health is the domain of the patient.

Nursing is a profession that is involved with the care of the individual and the health of the community. We believe that the essence of nursing is caring for the individual a unified whole with the biological, psychological, intellectual, social, emotional, and spiritual needs.  It is the goal of nursing to provide dynamic, compassionate, and integrated care through use of the nursing process.  This process includes therapeutic intervention, communication and critical thinking.  The practice of nursing encompasses both science and art.  The science of nursing is based upon principles of applied and behavioral sciences as identified by professional nursing organizations through established standards of care.  The art of nursing embodies the skillful, creative and intuitive application of nursing knowledge.  Nursing collaborates with other health team members, the patient and the family to promote individual autonomy in establishing and maintaining an optimal state of wellness, recovery from illness or a peaceful death.  Inherent in both the science and the art of nursing is the responsibility to implement health teaching.  Further, there are legal, ethical and moral components that serve as a framework for actions and judgments in nursing practice.

Learning is a life-long process that includes acquisition of knowledge, development of skills, and increasing self-discovery.  The student assumes responsibility for personal and professional growth and for active participation in the teacher-learner relationship.  Learning proceeds from simple to complex, and is enhanced by the correlation of theoretical concepts and clinical experiences.

The role of the Faculty is to provide educational experiences and guidance to facilitate the learning process and to foster the development of the student as a person, nurse and citizen.  In this environment, the student is encouraged to engage in critical thinking, self-directed inquiry and self-expression so that personal and professional goals may be attained.

We, the Faculty of the Jameson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, accept responsibility for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the total program in response to the needs of the community, current nursing practice, and individual needs of the students.  The Faculty supports the Philosophy of the Jameson Memorial Hospital and recognizes the advantage of ties between nursing education and an institution that provides a variety of health care services.
